It is really important that as many firms as possible take action because the proposed changes which are to get the LR ready for privatisation, will affect all conveyancers as well as our clients.
We encourage you to also write to your MP about this issue. Here is an example I took from the PSC's website.
Dear <name MP>,
I write to express my concern on government proposals as contained in a recently launched consultation on the introduction of a land registry service delivery company. The consultation document proposes two things. Firstly that HM Land Registry (HMLR) separated into an office of the Chief Land Registrar and a Service Delivery Company and secondly that the Service Delivery Company be transferred out of the civil service either to the private sector or a quasi private sector body called a government owned company (GovCo).
I am concerned that should any of these options be taken forward it would require a change in legislation so that HMLR is no longer governed by statute. This change will make the Land Registry less accountable to the public and MPs. It puts at risk the confidence that house purchasers and other users will have in the service. There is also a real possibility of cost-cutting which will put quality, local jobs at risk. I am also concerned that work will be hived off including the risk of the off-shoring and that the cost of land registration will increase, as a result of ‘digital by default’, with conveyancers being expected to undertake traditional Land Registry work.
I would also ask you to write to the Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for BIS expressing my concerns.
Yours sincerley
